There are three types of dividends basically which a company announces over a period of one year.
An interim dividend is the dividend which a company announces and pays before it conducts the annual general meeting (AGM) at the end of the year.
Final dividends are paid out at the end of the year when the company comes out with its annual report and conducts the AGM.
Special dividends are one-time dividends that a company may or may not pay. These are very rare.
While final dividends are only paid out once a year, interim dividends can be paid more than once and at any point in the financial year.
Interim dividends can be paid when a company declared its quarterly results. Usually, as the interim dividends are declared many times, the rate of dividend is lower when compared to final dividend.
When it comes to dividends, it is important to keep the date criteria in mind. There is record date and ex-dividend date.
The record date and the ex-dividend date determine who all will receive dividends.
The record date is set by the company's board, and it is the date on which the company compiles a list of shareholders for which it has declared a dividend.
Ex-dividend date on the other hand means the date on which the company is without dividend. The ex-dividend date represents the cut-off date for share ownership relating to a current dividend payment process.
Note that interim dividends can help you to indicate whether a company may or may not continue with regular dividend payouts.
