Financial Year '23

  • The Indian commercial vehicle (CV) industry continued its growth trajectory in FY23. This growth was primarily led by Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles ('M&HCVs') (52.4% in FY23) and continued robust recovery in passenger carriers (155% in FY23).
  • It was catalysed by robust demand for heavy trucks required to service the strong infrastructure push by the Government of India and increased activity in e-commerce, construction, and mining. Higher replacement demand, advance buying in anticipation of price hikes, further buoyed the demand.
  • The PV industry recorded 27% YoY wholesale growth in FY23. The industry recorded highest ever annual wholesale volumes of 3.8 million in FY23.
  • Sports Utility Vehicle ('SUVs') continue to garner larger share of sales in the market. The growth has come on the back of pent-up demand in the first half of FY23, exciting launches, good festive demand and an overall increase in supplies.
  • The share of SUVs increased to 43.1% in FY23, 3% higher than FY22 and share of hatchbacks decreased to 34.5% in FY23, 3.1% lower than FY22. Share of Sedans, MPVs and vans remained flat at around 10.5%, 8.5% and 3.5%, respectively.
  • The EV industry witnessed significant growth in FY23 owing to progressive EV polices launched by multiple state governments, launch of new products, proliferation of public charging infrastructure, increasing awareness of home charging and increasing acceptance of EVs amongst customers.
  • The industry grew by 170% from 22,000 in FY22 to 59,000 in FY23. EV fleet demand has seen a considerable growth in FY23 as corporates started ‘work-from-office’ and people re-started using ride hailing services with receding of Covid-19 scare. India is on track to become the largest EV market by 2030, with a total investment opportunity of more than US$ 200 bn over the next 8-10 years.
  • In FY23, total automobile exports from India stood at 4.7 million. Indian automobile exports of two-wheelers stood at 3.6 m in FY23. The Indian automotive industry is targeting to increase the export of vehicles by five times during 2016-26.
  • To keep up with the growing demand, several auto makers have started investing heavily in various segments of the industry. The industry attracted Foreign Direct Investment equity inflow (FDI) worth US$ 34.11 bn between April 2000-December 2022, accounting for 5.45% of the total equity FDI during the period.
  • In February 2023, Nissan and Renault announced their plans to invest US$ 600 million in India over the next 3-5 years to expand their market share in passenger cars and electric vehicles. MG Motor India too announced plans to invest US$ 100 million to expand capacity, eyeing a 70% growth in 2023.

  • With the rise in fuel price of diesel and increased focus of the government towards increasing the CNG distribution infrastructure across the country, the demand for CNG vehicles could see an upsurge in the near future.
  • The electric vehicles/hybrid market is buzzing with a lot of activity especially in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments with a host of new entrants eyeing the market. The Indian automobile industry is expected to move forward in this direction with increased local production especially in the battery segment.
