Financial Year '23

  • During FY23, the overall retail industry grew at 15% to Rs 84 trillion (tn) as economic activity resumed post the pandemic. Organised retail grew at 20% to Rs 9 tn (11% of the overall retail industry) while e-retail grew at 24% to Rs 3 tn (3.7% of the overall retail industry)
  • While the rural market growth improved from 4 % to 7.5 % between FY22 and FY23, headwinds remain. There was increased demand for fashion, beauty, and personal care products from Tier II and III cities.
  • Retailers' optimism regarding India's potential for long-term success was reflected in the uptick in space take-up and supply addition. Retail activity was driven by absorption in newly completed investment-grade developments and sustained demand in secondary spaces.
  • According to industry reports, the e-commerce industry witnessed a phenomenal 36.8% YoY growth in terms of order volumes. As consumers prefer to shop online throughout the year, this fast-changing consumer preference towards online shopping reveals the mature status acquired by e-commerce brands in India.
  • India had a boom in attracting international companies; it is now the fifth-largest global destination for retail. The industry growth is riding on several factors, including rising disposable incomes, exposure of Gen Z to international brands, and ease of doing business. Lulu Group, a UAE-based retail company, will invest Rs. 20 bn to develop a shopping mall near Ahmedabad in Gujarat as part of its plans to expand business in India.
