Asian markets traded higher on Friday tracking overnight rally on Wall Street, with Japan's Nikkei leading gains.

Nikkei 225 rallied 1.9% and the Topix gained 1.6%. South Korea's Kospi rose 1.5% and the Kosdaq spiked 1.5%.

US stock market indexes ended higher on Thursday with the S&P 500 and the Dow hitting intraday record.

At present, the BSE Sensex is trading 158 points higher and NSE Nifty is trading 57 points higher.

JSW Steel, Hindalco and Tata Steel among the top gainers today.

Axis Bank, NTPC and Cipla the other hand are among the top losers today.

Broader markets are trading on positive. The BSE Midcap index is trading 0.1% higher and the BSE Smallcap index is trading 0.2% higher.

Sectoral indices are trading mixed today with stocks in metal sector and energy sector witnessing most buying. Meanwhile stocks in consumer durables and telecom sector witnessing selling pressure.

The rupee is trading at Rs 83.58 against the US dollar.

NTPC Approves Rs 208 Billion Investment

State-owned power giant NTPC Ltd on Thursday (19 September) said its board of directors had granted investment approval for two major thermal power projects with a combined investment of Rs 209.2 bn.

The Sipat Super Thermal Power Project (Stage-III), located in Chhattisgarh, will see an expansion of 1x800 MW at an estimated cost of Rs 97.9 bn.

Additionally, the board has approved investment for the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project (Stage-II), situated in Odisha. This project will also add 1x800 MW to NTPC's energy portfolio, with an estimated cost of Rs 111.3 bn.

NTPC recorded a 13.5% year-on-year jump in its revenue at Rs 444.2 bn for the April to June 2024 quarter, the state-owned power generation company's financial results showed on 27 July. In the corresponding quarter last fiscal, the firm's revenue stood at Rs 391.2 bn.

The firm's profit rose 11% year-on-year to Rs 45.1 bn in the first quarter of FY25 from Rs 40.7 bn in the same quarter of the previous fiscal.

VST Industries Block Deal

Ace investor Radhakishan Damani has sold 1 lakh shares in VST Industries for Rs 44 m via block deal.

Damani who is the founder and promoter of DMart, had on Tuesday sold 1 lakh shares or a 0.6% stake in VST Industries for Rs 43.9 m via a bulk deal.

In the block deal, the buyers were Reliance Mutual Fund and Thrift Savings Plan.

These 1 lakh shares sold today represent 0.7% stake in VST Industries.

After the share sale, Damani's holding in VST Industries has come down to 2.8% from 3.5%.

Reliance Mutual Fund and Thrift Savings Plan acquired 1,68,970 shares, amounting to a 1.09 per cent stake in VST Industries in the price range of Rs 439.96-440.7 apiece, taking the transaction value to Rs 74.4 m.

Thrift Savings Plan is a contribution plan for United States civil service employees and retirees as well as for members of the uniformed services.

Power Grid Bags Transmission Project

Power Grid Corporation of India announced that it has been declared as a successful bidder under tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) to establish an inter-state transmission system in Madhya Pradesh.

Power Grid has been declared as the successful bidder under TBCB to establish an inter-state transmission system for the project namely a transmission system for evacuation of power from Rajasthan REZ Phase IV (Part 2: 5.5 GW) (Jaisalmer/ Barmer Complex): part H1 on build, own operate and transfer (BOOT) basis.

The project comprises the establishment of a new 765/400/220kV sub-station at Kurawar, 765kV & 400kV D/C transmission lines and associated bays extension works at other existing substations in Madhya Pradesh.

The power transmission firm also received a letter of intent (LoI) for the same project on 18 September 2024.

Power Grid Corporation of India has been established by the Government of India (GoI) as the central transmission utility of India. The firm is a Maharatna company under the Ministry of Power, GoI. As of 30 June 2024, the Government of India owned a 51.34% stake in the company.

The company reported a 3.5% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 37.2 bn in Q1 FY25 as compared with Rs 35.9 bn posted in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue from operations fell marginally to Rs 11,006.18 crore during the quarter compared with Rs 110.5 bn posted in the corresponding quarter last year.
