Sensex Today Trades Lower | Asian Paints Plunges 4% | Wipro & Titan Top Losers

Asian stocks were taking a breather near seven-month highs on Monday as investors awaited inflation data from the United States, Japan and Europe that will help refine expectations for future rate moves.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was little changed, having climbed 1.7 per cent last week to seven-month highs.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones ended the week up about 1% while the Nasdaq Composite added about 0.6%. Here's a table showing how US stocks performed on Friday:

At present, the BSE Sensex is trading 248 points down and NSE Nifty is trading 74 points lower.

L&T, Bajaj Auto and M&M are among the top gainers today.

Wipro, Asian Paints and Titan on the other hand are among the top losers today.

Broader markets are trading on mixed. The BSE Midcap index is trading 0.2% lower and the BSE Small Cap index is trading 0.2% higher.

Sectoral indices are trading mixed, with socks in power sector and capital goods sector witnessing buying. Meanwhile stocks in realty sector and IT sector witnessed selling pressure.

The rupee is trading at Rs 82.89 against the US dollar.

In commodity markets, gold prices are trading 0.2% lower at Rs 62,223 per 10 grams today.

Meanwhile, silver prices are trading 0.5% lower at Rs 71,919 per 1 kg.

Paytm Advisory Committee on RBI Action

An advisory committee, established by Paytm owner One97 Communications in response to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) action on its payments bank business, is actively engaging with the company on matters related to the panel's terms of reference. The committee is headed by the former Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

In response to a query about his involvement with Paytm, Damodaran stated that the committee has been engaging with the company on matters about the Advisory Committee's terms of reference.

He emphasized that the panel members serve as external advisors and that Paytm is currently focused on addressing the concerns raised by the RBI.

On 31 January, the RBI directed PPBL Paytm Payments Bank Ltd to cease further deposits, credit transactions, or top-ups in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, and National Common Mobility Cards, effective 29 February.

The deadline was later extended to 15 March.

In response, Paytm announced the formation of a group advisory committee led by Damodaran on 9 February.

The committee's purpose is to guide on enhancing compliance and regulatory matters.

Biocon Receives Penalty

Biocon Ltd on Friday said it has been imposed a penalty of over Rs 30 m over GST-related issues.

The company has received an order of adjudication imposing a penalty of Rs 3,03,78,465 dated 22 February 2024, from the office of Deputy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Divisional GST Office, Bangalore.

The demand is related to input tax credit reporting errors in GST monthly returns, denial of input tax credit on sales and promotional expenditures, valuation issue GST under corporate guarantee, and denial of exemption on export of services.

There is no material impact on the financials, operations or other activities of the company.

Zee Entertainment sets Up Advisory Panel

Zee Entertainment Enterprises on Friday announced a three-member independent advisory committee to restore shareholders' confidence and it will be headed by Satish Chandra.

The committee will also have Uttam Agarwal and P V Ramana Murthy, independent Directors of the company.

Justice (retd) Satish Chandra retired from Allahabad High Court in 2015, after serving as its judge for 7 years.

After completing his education, he started practice as an Advocate in Allahabad High Court. Later, he served as a Law Teacher at Bareilly College; and Dungar (PG) College, Bikaner.

He was also a Visiting Professor at L.B.S. National Academy, Mussoorie; Internal Security Academy, Mt. Abu; and various Institutes in Russia and Poland.

The Hague Academy of International Law, The Hague, has awarded a fellowship to Dr Chandra. He was a Visiting Professor at the Institute of State and Law, Moscow. He was a Constitutional Advisor to the Government of Zanzibar as well as a Judge at High Court, Zanzibar.

Sony had initiated arbitration proceedings before The Singapore Arbitration Center (SIAC) claiming US$ 90 million (around Rs 748.5 crore) as a termination fee.
