The BSE Sensex touched an all time high to 6,150 led by Rs 31 bn investment by FIIs in February 2000. The movement in the markets was highly related to tech heavy Nasdaq, as Sensex showed some hint of co-relation with US indices. Since the beginning of the year till March 2000 Nasdaq gained 11%. Though the upbeat sentiment in the market was dampened by the budget. The finance minister increased the FII investment limit in companies coupled with special tax rebates for venture capital funds in India.
But, in the beginning of April 2000, the Sensex lost more than 360 points in a single day due to concerns regarding the double taxation treaty for FIIs based in Mauritius. Although this issue got resolved later, selling continued unabated. FIIs sold securities worth Rs 14 bn in July 2000, highest ever in the past eight years. As on September 2000, the Sensex lost 32% compared to its all time high of 6,000 in February. FII investment was marginal at Rs 1.2 bn. The fall was partly led by the fall in Nasdaq, which lost 28% compared to its high of 5,132 in March 2000.
